- The ideology of the opposition is the same ideology that killed Nido
- Congress believes in taking everybody along, says Mr. Rahul Gandhi
- India could learn from Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya when it comes to women’s empowerment
- Focus on building infrastructure and promoting tourism in the region
Addressing two mega rallies in the north-east, Congress Vice President, Mr. Rahul Gandhi assured the people of the region that they are not alone and that the Congress party will stand with them. “We want to create an India in which, wherever you go, all of you are welcomed with open arms,” he told a huge gathering in the picturesque town of Hapoli, Ziro District in Arunachal Pradesh.
Expressing anguish over the killing of Nido Taniam, he drew similarities with the philosophy of the opposition. “An ideology which attacks north Indians in Maharashtra and the North East people in Delhi – this is the ideology of the opposition. Opposition wants to make one set of people fight with another. Why did Nido die? He died because of this ideology,” he said. The Congress
believes in taking everybody along, he added.
Complimenting the two states on the status of women in their societies, he said that the country could learn from them. He said in Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress led government has taken several measures to empower women, including setting up the first women police station in the North-East in the city of Itanagar. At the two rallies, Mr. Rahul Gandhi also spoke of bringing more
women in the decision making process and giving more power to the people at the grass roots. “True change can take place only when we devolve power. We want to give maximum power to panchayats and local bodies,” he said. Mr. Gandhi added that in the next 5-10 years, the Congress will bring 70 crore people into the middle class.
Mr. Rahul Gandhi elaborated on several measures taken by the Congress for the development of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Opening up of the first state Agricultural University at Pasighat, building the Rajiv Gandhi High Altitude Sports Complex, setting up IIM, NIT and NIFT in Shillong, the trans Arunachal highway, are some of the many steps taken by the Congress government in the centre and the state for the welfare of the people of the region.
He added that the Congress party and the two states share a deep association. Former Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi had ensured full statehood for Meghalaya and Union Territory status for Arunachal Pradesh. Later, under Shri Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership Arunachal Pradesh was also also granted full statehood. The Congress party will focus on further improving infrastructure
and promoting tourism in the region.
Mr. Gandhi also appreciated the natural beauty of the two states and promised to come back again. “I haven’t seen such a beautiful place in my life. I want to spend time here” he told the crowd gathered at Ziro
