Well, we may have known it all along but it’s finally official: the Liberhan Commission appointed to investigate the destruction of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 is out with its report which is believed to hold senior BJP leaders responsible. Despite some of the usual shenanigans (this time involving firebrand leader Uma Bharti’s views on her own hanging), we are left with the thought that the report might be out now, but the issue died a natural death years ago.
But 17 years after he was assigned the task, Mr Liberhan has come up with something that he certainly believes to be a job well done. Well, it isn’t much of a job considering that this will hardly bring any real judicial closure to the event. Instead, memory and public interest had dealt with the whole Babri Masjid issue once and for all.
