DELHI CONGRESS LEADERS ALLEGE THAT THE UNION POWER MINISTER WAS MAKING FALSE STATEMENTS TO COVER UP HIS OWN INEFFICIENCY AND ALSO TO PROTECT THE BJP.
CONGRESS SETS UP CONTROL ROOM ON POWER AND WATER ISSUES—DECISION TO GHERAO UNION POWER MINISTER PIYUSH GOEL
NEW DELHI, June 10—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, strongly criticizing the statement of Union Power Minister Shri Piyush Goel, said the Union Minister’s statement was not only insulting to the people of Delhi, but it was also like rubbing salt into the wounds of the people, already harassed by power and water shortages. Congress said the charges leveled against the Congress Party by Shri Piyush Goel for the power shortage was totally unfounded and not based on facts. The Congress advised him to concentrate his attention on solving the power problems haunting the people in Delhi by getting additional power from the Central pool. The Congress Party made it clear that the power and water problem was not a political issue for the Congress, but an emotional issue.
At a joint press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan here today, DPCC president Shri Arvinder Singh, MLA, CLP leader Shri Haroon Yusuf, senior leader and chief spokesperson Shri Mukesh Sharma, MLAs Jaikishan, Mateen Ahmed, Devinder Yadav and former Minister Rajkumar Chauhan, making a direct attack on Union Power Minister Piyush Goel, said the statement of Shri Piyush Goel and the Lt. Governor’s direction to switch off the street lights and the electronic equipments reminded the people of Delhi of the rule of the BJP in Delhi from 1993 to 1998. It may be recalled that during the BJP rule, the demand for power in Delhi was just 1850 megawatts, but even then people used to come out on the streets, and hold demonstrations during nights due to power cuts. In fact, the Delhi Police had filed cases for demonstrating outside the electicity offices and for creating traffic jams, which were clearly evident of the power cuts that prevailed then.
Shri Arvinder Singh and Shri Haroon Yusuf said during the past 15 years, the Congress Government had made Delhi rid of power cuts, and a scheme had also been made to make Delhi an “island” on the power front. Both the leaders recalled that when the Northern Grid had failed, plunging Delhi into total darkness, the Congress Government had bought power from Bhutan to restore power supply in Delhi. They said the Government had supplied 5680 megatt power to Delhi with the same basic infrastructure and transmission lines. They said it was the responsibility of the power companies in Delhi to ensure that there was no power shortage in Delhi. Both the leaders said Shri Piyush Goel did not have knowledge about actual facts, and that was why he was making misleading statements to save the face of the BJP. They said during the past ten days, people in Delhi started buying invertors once again, and people were also reparing their old invertors by spending Rs 8000-10000, and despite that, the people were suffering from power shortage.
Shri Arvinder Singh, Shri Haroon Yusuf, Shri Mateen Ahmed, Shri Jaikishan and Shri Devinder Yadav jointly said that the Congress Government had established 225 new power grids, and the then NDA Government and then Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee had praised the Congress Government for its efforts to solve the power problem. Shri Yusuf said the Union Government was trying to save its skin by taking cover at the dust storms. The Congress also held Shri Arvind Kejriwal responsible for the power woes facing the people.
Shri Mukesh Sharma announced that the Congress Party has setup a control room to provide relief from the power and water woes. He said people could sms their complaints on power and water woes to Mobile No 9911911946 and on E-Mail ID: maildpcc@gmail.com.
All the leaders asked the people to inform the control room about agitations and traffic jams on the power and water shortages happening in Delhi so that the party could send its leaders to solve the problems. Attacking Piyush Goel, they said he was talking like a spokesman of the BJP, and not as the Union Power Minister. They warned that if the power and water problems were not solved quickely, and Shri Goel did not stop his irresponsible statements, the Congress will gherao his house and office.
