Against the tide

There’s a reason that the BJP is losing its traditional middle-class support base, argues NDTV’s Barkha Dutt, and it’s because its agenda is way out of sync with theirs. When they do finally take a stand against the right-wing fringe loonies within their own party, it’s often too late, and they come across looking effete and ineffectual.

It begins with an interesting tidbit…

There’s a story about Varun Gandhi that no one in the BJP will tell you on the record. It goes something like this. A party leader, who shall remain unnamed, rang the controversial young politician to invite him for a party function. “Varun,” he said, “could you please come to …” only to find that he had been cut off midstream by an irate Gandhi at the other end of the phone line.
